Many people think that fat's only job in the body, is to act an energy reserve. And while that maybe be true, it has 8 other functions that are much less known. Interestingly, some of these are even vital to keep us alive.
1. Energy Reserves
As already mentioned above, the body does use fat, along with other source of nutrients, in periods of starvation.
2. Source of Energy
Fat gives over double the amount of calories per gram, over both protein and carbohydrates. For this reason, many long distance runners are switching to high fat diets.
3. Cell Health
Good fats are essential to the growth and function of every cell in the body. It also makes up the cell membrane of each of those cells.
4. Brain Health
The brain is rich in fatty acids, that's why it's so important for us to supply the brain with good fats. Especially the sections of the brain that need it are in charge of our sight, speech and motor skills.
Some vitamins, called fat soluble vitamins, can only be absorbed into the body if fat is present. These include: Vitamin A, important for eye health. Vitamin D, for strong bones and calcium absorption. Vitamin E, to protect cells from free radicals in the body. And Vitamin K, blood clotting.
6. Skin, Nails & Hair
Fats play a role in keeping our skin and hair moisturizer and soft.
Almost every hormone in the body, needs fat to either be formed or transported, or both. Hormones tell the body what to do and then to do it. If there are no hormones, then the body is out of wack. Hormones can only function at full capacity if fat is present.
Reduces heat loss and help regulates body temperature. ;P Good excuse to indulge during winter, huh?
9. Shock Absorption
Protect sensitive organs from severe trauma.
